Alive-O Programme – A Review
This Review by Éanna Johnson PhD analyses the religion programme in Ireland’s Catholic primary schools, the Alive-O Programme, in light of the Catholic Church’s vision for education in the Faith. The Alive-O Programme was introduced over the years 1996-2004, and is the responsibility of the Council for Catechetics of the Irish Episcopal Conference. Careful analysis reveals that Alive-O, while containing some good features, falls short of conformance with the Church’s vision for catechesis, and is unacceptable.
This Review also includes Dr Johnson’s nationwide Learning Assessment Survey of pupils who had completed all eight years of Alive-O, which indicates that the Programme is failing to give pupils an adequate grasp of the basics of Catholic Faith.
